1. Day 1 · Ushuaia

   Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel

   Boarding is early evening in Ushuaia, the last city on the continent, pinned between the Martial range and the water. The ship sails after dinner, past the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse on its bare rock, and by the time the coffee is cleared the town is a smear of light astern. Ahead is Nassau Bay and the open run to Cape Horn.

2. Day 2

   Cape Horn and Wulaia Bay

   The first morning is the one everybody came for: Cape Horn, the headland where two oceans meet and the next land south is Antarctica. Whether the Zodiacs can put you ashore is the weather's call, never the schedule's. The afternoon drops into Wulaia Bay, a green anchorage the Beagle knew, where a forest climb opens the whole sound and the sea comes back into view from above.

3. Day 3

   Pia Glacier and Porter Glacier

   Pia Fjord in the morning, with the ship nosed up to the glacier front and a walk on the moraine that puts the entire wall of ice in one frame. The afternoon is Porter Glacier, reached through the same channels, where the ice runs down to the waterline and the noise of it moving carries much further than seems reasonable.

4. Day 4

   Aguila Glacier and Condor Glacier

   A Zodiac landing on the beach below Aguila, then a walk through native forest to the foot of the glacier, near enough to feel the cold coming off it. Later the ship works into Condor Fjord, where the birds the glacier is named for ride the updraft off the cliffs and the Zodiacs run the ice at the waterline.

5. Day 5 · Punta Arenas

   Magdalena Island and Punta Arenas

   The last morning lands on Magdalena Island in the middle of the Strait of Magellan, where a marked path runs up to the lighthouse through a colony of Magellanic penguins tens of thousands strong. The ship is alongside in Punta Arenas by half past twelve. In September and April the island is closed to visitors and Marta Island, with its sea lions, stands in.

The sailing date moves this price most: the operator runs three seasons, and the opening and closing weeks of the season cost roughly half what midsummer does. Cabin category and single occupancy are the other two. Government port, tax and national park fees are set by the port authorities, are not in the price above, and are charged per person.
